Platinum is so enduring that the original metre and kilogram — the world’s measurement standards — were made from a platinum-iridium alloy.
With a melting point of 1768 °C, platinum demands many times the energy of ordinary metals when made into a colloid.
Its inertness towards body tissue makes platinum prized in medical technology — for pacemaker electrodes, for example.
